6/29/2023 0 Comments Alice in wonderland novelAs children we expect the world to be different as we grow up, but it isn’t how we pictured it. This shows Alice’s confusion and worries over growing up. Her size constantly keeps changing as she tries to eat the cake to get to the right size. Then, she starts going through the doors to get to the garden she can see. When she gets to Wonderland, she is scared and confused. In Wonderland, she meets a lot of interesting characters. The rabbit jumps down the rabbit hole, and Alice falls behind him. His human-like actions intrigue her, and she follows him. The story follows Alice, who falls down a rabbit hole and ends up in a fantasy world that is unique and weird yet wonderful.Īlice is bored one afternoon in the garden when she sees a rabbit darting towards some bushes. When I finally found the audiobook, I started listening to it. This book has been on my reading list for years, and I have read a few pages here and there. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll is a children’s fantasy novel.

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER Want to know the truth about what life is like as a mum and step-mum with a chaotic patchwork family? This book is everything I've been through that's made me who I am, plus the lessons I've learned from many mistakes. Through his eyes, as a member of the Fourth Infantry we see a soldier’s life in the raw, no holds barred. However this book has one very important element which makes it stand out against other similar history books, and that is Billy Gogan himself. The author uses a blend of real and fictional characters to make this an excellent history book, with clear maps and outstanding information on the movements of American army as they fought against the Mexicans in the American – Mexican war. However, after the tragic death of his good friend and companion Mary Skiddy, and the Great Fire of New York, it is a reflective Billy who, aged 16 decides to join Uncle Sam’s army, and this is where the second book really begins.įor anyone with an interest in this period of history this book will, I am sure be compulsive reading. Living by his wits, and doing what he has to, to survive, Billy quickly learns to grow up, establishes a life in Gotham, and eventually becomes an American citizen. This book is the sequel to the author’s first book, Billy Gogan: American, in which orphan Billy is sent from Ireland to America on the eve of the 1844 Irish Famine. 6/29/2023 0 Comments Jeffty Is Five by Harlan EllisonIn the libraries of peoples' reading histories, his writing seems to fall in a crack between Stephen King, Clive Barker, Vonnegut, Tolkien, Lewis Carroll, and perhaps an anthology containing a story or two by Asimov and Bradbury. In fact, I am shocked and bejiggered to find so many people who have never even heard of Harlan Ellison. But when I mention Dreams., nobody has ever heard of it. It seems strange to write a review of a book a year after its publication and many years after the first publications of its material. QPBC calls Dreams with Sharp Teeth "An omnibus volume of three books by Harlan Ellison: I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream., Deathbird Stories., and Shatterrday." I call it a big, fat book stuffed full of the most insightful, finely crafted, twisted writing ever waiting to be read. If I were to recommend a single reason to join Quality Paperback Book Club it would be this book. 6/28/2023 0 Comments ShadowshaperBut not just critical love there’s been blog buzz and reader buzz for this title, too. A myriad of lists (both summer reading recommendations and year’s best). And while I am not here to report that this is a perfect book (does such a thing even exist?), I am happy to say that I’m not alone in my excitement. All this waiting! All my bottled up excitement! I’ve had a few other books surprise me once I’ve picked them up this year, but this is a title I went into intrigued about - that cover! That premise! URBAN FANTASY, I HEART YOU. And now we are at the review I’ve been most excited about all year! The one that made me curse the linear nature of the calendar year, and the September publication date ( editing note: I just found out Amazon listed this as out in June. The companions are in alternative Switzerland and meet some people. All the individuals who exist are duplicated on both planets. The Owner of the Voice, the narrator, and his companion, the Botanist, find themselves on a planet exactly like the Earth in terms of biology and geography, but on the far away in space ‘out beyond Sirius’. A Modern Utopia is no novel, despite describing fictitious events and characters. For me, a story is all of the above and something more. A description of events and characters which change over the duration of the story. I read a free Gutenberg edition published of the first edition. Originally published (as so many novels of the time were) in serialised form from October 1904 to April 1905, A Modern Utopia came to be a book later in 1905. However, it has merits in the history of science fiction so is worth my time. Declaration of interest: I really wasn’t looking forward to reading this and debated not bothering at all. 6/27/2023 0 Comments Queen of swords sara donatiIt is a place unlike any she has ever experienced. Elizabeth Middleton leaves her comfortable English estate to join her family in a remote New York mountain village. I’m going to attempt to summarise each of the blurbs for the rest of this article so that you can get a feel for what the series is about.ĭecember of 1792. They’re also multi-generational, spanning decades. The stories are rich in detail and inter-connecting back stories with a heavy cast of characters. This is not a series that you can follow without having read each book. While I loved all six books in the series, book 5, Queen of Swords, is my ultimate favourite. They were, of course, definitely worth the wait! There are six books in total and the series is now finished with all titles available in gorgeous matching covers. I was over-joyed to see the promo for the second instalment advertised in the back cover, less so when I realised I would have to wait two years for it, and for each one thereafter. To my utter delight, Into the Wilderness proved itself a most enjoyable read, containing all of the necessary ingredients required for a good historical fiction with romantic elements. But even back then I loved historical fiction, as my friend well knew, and thick books had never put me off either. I’d never heard of Sara Donati before, nor had I heard of Diana Gabaldon, whose high praise on the cover conveyed much about this mystery book’s contents. I received the first book in The Wilderness Series, Into the Wilderness, as a thank you gift from a friend. 6/27/2023 0 Comments Get in the Van by Henry RollinsA major part of the writings about 1982 is dedicated to the band's first tour of England, which Rollins paints as a mostly ugly affair. From there, Rollins recounts a string of violent shows, long hours on the road, and abuse by police while immersed in the poverty-stricken bohemian lifestyle the band had maintained. The entries begin in the spring of 1981, and document the time surrounding Rollins' personal introduction to and joining of Black Flag. Sections of the book were read and recorded by Rollins and released as a 2-CD set, which won a Grammy in 1995 for Best Spoken Word Album. Other text includes recollections of times when he had yet to start, or had lapsed in, his journal-keeping. The book is composed of journal entries that Rollins kept while he was lead singer of the band Black Flag from 1981 to its breakup in 1986. Get in the Van is a memoir by singer, writer and spoken word artist Henry Rollins first published in 1994 by Rollins' own company, 2.13.61 Publications. |
